Georgia Lowry’s ‘rock star’ cells are saving kids from cancer

This week’s West Aussie Great became well-known to many people in Perth after her heartwarming appearance as the Telethon child in 1997.
Georgia Lowry is Australia’s youngest bone marrow recipient, and her cells have revolutionised cancer treatment for kids.
Scientists have been able to create better outcomes for young cancer sufferers, including advanced treatment options, after her cells were donated when she was just eight weeks old, taking the survival rate from 2 per cent to almost 90 per cent.
The 28-year-old’s cells are now labeled “Rock Stars”.
“It’s mind-blowing that something amazing can come from something bad,” she told Mark Gibson, in for Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast this week.
“I’m just humbled and really, really honoured to have my cells researched on and doing good for others.”
