Greens promise super profits tax for multinationals, billionaires

Australian Greens leader and federal Melbourne MP Adam Bandt has revealed a controversial tactic his party hopes will attract traditional Labor and Liberal voters at next month’s federal election.
Ahead of an appearance at the National Press Club, Bandt told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings his party’s election campaign would differ by promising a “tycoon tax” on multi-nationals, billionaires and big corporations to fund basic party policy outcomes such as free dental care and better housing packages.
“We’re not talking about small businesses here, we’re talking about big corporations… when they’re turning over more than $100m, on their super profits, we’re saying let’s make them pay a super profits tax on those big profits they are making,” he said on Wednesday.
“According to the Parliamentary Budget Office, you’re bringing in an extra $33b a year, so it would more than cover the cost [of policies].
“Why is it that a nurse pays more tax than a multi-national or a big corporation in Australia at the moment? That’s wrong and we’ve got to fix it.
“Other countries around the world are looking at this.”
