Geographe Bay labelled ‘stranding hotspot’ after 160 pilot whales beached

Volunteers flocked to Toby Inlet yesterday after four pods beached themselves, eventually saving 100 of the estimated 160 pilot whales.

Geographe Bay is known to have had WA’s largest stranding event in 1996 with over 320 whales coming to shore.

Dr Capri Jolliffe Chair of the Geographe Marine Research Centre told Gary Adshead on 6PR MorningsĀ they are hoping they don’t get any restrandings today considering the bays history and how pilot whales get tend to get confused around shallow water.

“Strandings tend to be long finned pilot whales… that’s in part because they live in very big complex societies and they are very close knit socially, so they do travel in these huge pods where if one animal comes to shore, they do tend to all come ashore.”
