Article image for Fremantle fight on, but lose to Lions

Fremantle put up a fight against the Lions at the GABBA on Saturday afternoon, Michael Walters brought the Dockers within a goal in the final term, but a Dayne Zorko goal sealed the deal for Brisbane for their 12-point win.

The Lions got out to an early lead, with Fremantle only leveling the scores during the second quarter and then they continued to play catch up before the final siren and 12.9 (81) to 10.9 (69) scoreline.

Charlie Cameron was a star for the Lions with the young West Aussie kicking four goals. Sean Darcy was a casualty for Fremantle going down in the third term with a left knee injury.

With a couple of minutes left, Michael Walters gave Fremantle hope, kicking two quick goals, but Brisbane bounced back for the win.

“I felt like, for a young group; two games in a row that we finished pretty strong, we just need to make sure that we do that from the start rather than waiting late,” Walters told us after the game.

After the game Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir said Sean Darcy will have scans on his knee tomorrow “but doesn’t look great at this stage.”

Nathan Wilson was a late exclusion on Saturday morning for Fremantle and has given debutant Hayden Young a chance.

Assistant coach Michael Prior says Wilson has pulled up with a “tight”, sore back since the last session.
“We’ve got to win the ball through the middle of the ground. They’ve got a really talented midfield; if they get on top there, that really drives their forward half game, which is what they want,” Prior told 6PR.
