Australians over the age of 30 will have access to a fourth dose of anti-coronavirus vaccine as early as today.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation will recommend fourth doses for anyone over the age of 50, and allow anyone over the age of 30 to have another booster shot, if they wish to have one.

Deakin University chair of epidemiology Professor Catherine Bennett said health authorities originally thought a third dose would be good enough to prevent contracting COVID-19.

“Now we’re in winter with yet another subvariant starting to push our case numbers, this is the time they [health authorities] are going to look at that as extra protection for people, some who have already had multiple infections, it might just lower their risk for the next couple of months as we get through winter,” she told Gary Adshead, in for Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings.
