It’s taken a century but, thanks to a series of amazing strokes of luck, the life and sacrifice of a once-unknown soldier has been remembered.

6PR Mornings producer Shane Douglas’ great-grandfather lost his life in the Battle of Pozières Ridge in 1916, but the Douglas family have had almost no record of how or why until now.

Thanks to the chance discovery of Andrew Pittaway’s book Fremantle: Voices of the Great War in a Donnybrook second-hand store, the family has been able to piece a unique and stirring historical story back together.

I can’t thank Andrew enough; I mean, he got a gong in the King’s awards recently, and I think he should get a knighthood, as far as I’m concerned,” Mr Douglas said.
