With high-profile sporting injuries dominating the headlines, it has been revealed that there are more fatal injuries in sports than previously acknowledged.

Dr Lauren Fortington from Edith Cowan University joined Julie-Anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons to discuss the data from the first national analysis of fatal injuries occurring during sport or active recreation.

“In general it was almost 1200 [deaths] which equates to 63 per year, so one a week or a bit more.”

“It’s similar to all our injuries that we see [more fatal injuries] in the male population, and it tends to be the young adult males,” Dr Fortington said.
