Family of unarmed man shot dead say police got it wrong

A Perth family insist they have been denied justice after being shot by a police officer in his Beechboro home three years ago.
The family of Ly Tong have decided to speak out in the wake of controversial court decisions recently in other police shooting deaths.
Unlike those cases, the family is struggling to understand how a police officer could fire three shots at close range, two of them hitting Ly in the chest, yet not face a single charge in the court of law.
“It was a strange set of circumstances that led to this 38-year-old man’s death on November 22, 2018,” Liam Bartlett said on 6PR Mornings.
“Earlier that day, Ly Tong’s sister and father went to Midland Police Station to get help for him.”

6PR Mornings took a call from Ken, who was the September 2021 inquest, who said he believed it was up to a court to decide whether a police officer was innocent.
“There’s no question he should be charged, so it comes into an open court and everyone can hear exactly what happened and a jury can decide whether what he did was justified,” he told the program.
“Our system is that when someone is killed, it’s the most serious crime you can imagine, and the best outcome is a jury trial, so that all of the facts can come out.”
