Exclusive: One of the 20 Kalgoorlie locals who won a share in last night’s largest Powerball jackpot in history has told 6PR Mornings it was the group’s first time playing Lotto, after a last-minute decision to have a crack at the prizemoney.

“Peter”, 54, told 6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett and ‘News Review’ panel members Gary Adshead and Julie-anne Sprague winning a share of the $164 million division one jackpot, with two other tickets across Australia, had already “changed lives”.

“I couldn’t believe it, I checked the ticket about 10 times,” he told the equally-amazed trio on Mornings.

The Goldfields local, who wants to keep his place of work and residence anonymous, said the syndicate had decided “spur of the moment” to put $100 in, with each syndicate member winning $2.7m.

“I thought we’d only won second division.”

Earlier on Friday, Kalgoorlie mayor John Bowler joked on 6PR he had bought tickets at every shop in Kalgoorlie-Boulder except from the winning store, after another Goldfields syndicate of 250 people won $63m at the beginning of the year.
