Ex-Eagle details harrowing after-effects of concussion

Former West Coast forward Daniel Venables is still living with the lasting impacts of a traumatic brain injury he acquired after a sickening clash in round nine in 2019.
Venables, 23, hit the Optus Stadium turf hard after the incident in just his 21st match, with the concussion he sustained from the clash destroying his life.
“I get headaches, really fatigued, brain fog, probably not a space I want to be in to be honest,” he told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.
“Things just got worse over time [after the injury]. Every single head knock is different. I never got better.
“I went to the football on Sunday [at Optus Stadium], it’s been almost three years since I played and it’s hard to understand that, but I’m grateful I’m still here and need to remember how I was feeling back then and I guess that makes it easy … to move on.”
The premiership Eagle, who had a brain scan aged 17 that was all clear, is seeking a financial settlement from the AFL while his family wants the league to overhaul its concussion protocols.
