The tight-knit community of Aveley is reeling from two tragedies in the past month, the latest when two young women died on Sunday morning after their car ploughed into a lake off Gnangara Road and submerged.

Active community member Meena Rabadia, who attend a vigil last night and belongs to the same temple as the two 20-year-old girls, told Simon Beaumont on 6PR Mornings that hundreds of people attended to pay tribute.

“A huge thank you to the community … the girls were always smiling, they were lovely, young girls,” she said of the Kenyan natives.

City of Swan councillor Cate McCulloch said the tragedy will further unite the local community after the recent hit-and-run death of toddler Gareth Tetteh but didn’t see a safety issue with ornamental lakes and water features.

“I think long term they’ve been fairly safe… unfortunately you get these kind of freak accidents that pose questions as to where we use local government to look at deeper issues into safety, and it is something we need to consider in light of this,” she told Beaumont.
