‘Dire situation’: WA’s food supply shortage could last 4-6 weeks

The food supply crisis in WA that is already dangerously low will not return to normal levels for at least another month.
Independent Food Distributors Australia supplies to 6,500 venues across WA and CEO Richard Forbes said the current supply chain crisis was the worst disruption to food supply into state that he can remember.
He told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings there was no quick fix and believed the situation would not return to normal for at least four to six weeks.
“The problem is of course that the Trans [Australia] national railway line is the umbilical chord between the eastern states and WA …we are entirely reliant on that railway line,” he said.
“So when the umbilical chord is cut the food supply chain is effectively cut.
“We’re not just talking about supermarkets here, we’re talking about hospitals, aged care centres, schools, childcare centres, just on the instutional side.
“We’re also talking cafes, restaurants, pubs and close… all of those venues receive food from independent food distributors, and about 90 per cent of that food comes on rail.”
