Muslim cricketer Usman Khawaja is expected to be wearing shoes branded with the words “freedom is a right” and “all lives are equal”, at tomorrow’s first test against Pakistan in Perth.

Khawaja – the first Muslim to play for Australia –  told The Australian the gesture was not a protest but a human rights statement.

But Executive Council of Australian Jewry’s Co-Chief Executive Alex Ryvchin told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings its not helpful or necessary for Khawaja to use his sporting platform to make political statements.

“The words that Khawaja’s chosen are probably fairly moderate, but I do have a problem with any sort of political protests entering the sporting arena,” Mr Ryvchin said.
