COVID-19 cases jump again as WA eyes end to phase two restrictions

WA has recorded one death and 7075 new cases of COVID-19 overnight, an increase after four consecutive days of falling numbers.
Premier Mark McGowan announced the spike on Tuesday morning, after just 5566 new cases on Monday.
Two more people are now in intensive care, bringing the total to six, and there are 180 with COVID-19 in hospital.
A woman in her 80s who tested positive also died on Sunday, which was reported to WA Health on Monday.
Of the 7075 cases, 2213 were confirmed via PCR test and the remaining 4862 were self-reported positive RATs.
Mr McGowan said the peak in cases had been predicted for March 14 to 18, but with cases rising the true peak may be yet to come.
“There’s modelling and there are predictions and then there’s the real world, and we’re going through the real world,” he said.
“Our numbers are 7075, which is actually… very high by our standards, but whether that’s the peak or not, I don’t know.
“We’ll consider the level two restrictions, and when they come off, over coming days … in the lead up to the start of next month.”
