Councils outraged by Western Power’s huge light pole bill

Local councils around Perth have expressed their frustration at a arguably sudden notice given to them by Western Power, outlining an increase of street lighting charges by an astronomical 43 per cent.
City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin told Millsy and Karl onĀ 6PR Breakfast councils may have no choice but to pass on the cost to taxpayers.
“An increase of 43 per cent on the tariffs for light poles – in the City of Stirling, that equates to about $2.5 million,” Mr Irwin said.
“We could increase our rates and add another around 1.5 per cent, but obviously when we’re talking about cost-of-living pressures, that’s not a desirable outcome.”

Western Power has responded to the claims, stating that the decision to increase tariffs was done following “extensive” community consultation, including with local governments.
“The 43 per cent increase is a one step increase and will not flow in the following years,” a statement read.
“The cost is reflective of inflation, supplies and cost of recovery from LGAs.”
