Cottesloe residents will be hit with a $300 fee to put children’s play equipment on their front verges after the council unanimously voted in favour of the recommendation on Tuesday night.

The town’s Taskforce on Residential and Recreational Verge Uses met in June and suggested ratepayers who wanted to install play equipment should pay $300 to apply for a permit to do so, and then $100 annually.

“As if it doesn’t cost enough to live in Cottesloe as it is…. that’s what the level of red tape has come to in local government, with Cottesloe leading the way,” 6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett said.

Perth Live host Oliver Peterson spoke to local resident Katy Mason, from The Cottesloe Collective, who said the decision was not “family friendly”.

“I think what we all want to see is children playing outside. And with the cost of living going up and increasing expenses everywhere, I think it’s really alarming that a council could slap a family with $400 in the next 12 months,” she said.
