As the Australian Federal Police announced it would provide multi-jurisdiction protection for 10,000 Optus customers who have had 100-point levels of identification stolen, a caller to 6PR Mornings has detailed the outrageous response from the Department of Transport’s Success outlet to dozens of West Australians lining up to get new drivers’ licences on Friday morning.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said on Wednesday that Optus would contact Western Australians who they believe had their drivers licence details released.

“And they’re able to come into a drivers licence centre and get a new one… for free,” she told Perth Live on Wednesday.

But Mornings caller Gio says on Friday he attended the Success DoT outlet and was in a line with about three dozen people looking to get new drivers’ licences when they were told the outlet didn’t have enough staff to open today.

“I just thought, ‘are you serious’?” he told a stunned Liam Bartlett on Mornings.

“This is one of the biggest cyber security breaches in recent times and you’re not opening because you don’t have enough staff?”

He says the employee told people they could attend the Rockingham outlet “where it would be done quicker, or come back Monday”.
