Coles is trialling a ban on plastic fresh fruit and vegetable bags this month as part of an ongoing effort to cut down on single-use plastic waste.

The supermarket giant will remove single-use plastic fresh produce bags from 12 stores across the ACT on September 14.

From August 31 until September 13, customers who spend $5 in store on fruit and veggies will receive a free 3-pack of reusable mesh fresh produce bags made with 90 per cent recycled materials.

Caitlyn Richards, Coles Group’s responsible sourcing manager, told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast the trial will encourage customers to bring in reusable options for their fruit and veggies.

“It’s part of our ambition to be Australia’s most sustainable supermarket,” she said.
