Christian Porter to quit federal politics

WA Federal Liberal MP Christian Porter has announced he will quit politics and won’t contest the next federal election.
He made the announcement in a Facebook post where he said that he would now focus on his family.
Pressure had been mounting on Mr Porter to step away from politics after becoming embroiled in controversy.
He identified himself as the unnamed cabinet minister at the centre of an ABC report where he was accused of raping a woman in 1988, a claim he has always denied.
He said he had “no regrets” in his career despite experience the harsher side of politics.
Speaking with Oliver Peterson, former WA Premier Colin Barnett says it’s a sad day.
“Christian is probably the most talented person I’ve come accross in politics,” he said. “I’ve got little doubt that had these events not happened, he would’ve become a Prime Minister.”
Mr Porter served as Treasurer and Attorney General under Colin Barnett’s Liberal government.
Mr Barnett says the allegations against Mr Porter should not have been aired without being proved.
“It’s a sad day for Australia and not a great day for the Australian media. I think the ABC failed,” he said.
