Children Commissioner says an inquiry won’t fix Banksia Hill failings

WA’s Children and Young People Commissioner, Jacqueline McGowan-Jones, has responded to Gary Adshead’s calls for a special inquiry into Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

Last week, Gary Adshead put pressure on Ms McGowan-Jones by highlighting her failure to take action and address the failings of the facility.

Ms McGowan-Jones told 6PR Mornings an inquiry would only lead to more delays, rather than instant action.

“My concern would be, holding an inquiry may then say well let’s wait till the inquiry is finished, it would cost a significant amount of money that we could better use to give support to the young people in custody,” Ms McGowan-Jones said.
