Authorities are calling for the government to step in to deal with the increasing alcohol-fuelled violent incidents that have occurred over the summer.

It comes after a spate of incidents over New Years Eve that saw 90 people arrested across the state.

Youth curfews in the city have been suggested, as has a ban on full strength takeaway alcohol.

Liquor Store Owner and former Mayor of Port Hedland, Brent Ruddler, says the government needs to act.

“There should be no kids on the street at night with nowhere to go, anywhere for any reason,” he said on 6PR Mornings.

“We are very rich as a state, there is enough big players in the state that should be helping and supporting.

“There’s a lot of back up services that are not provided that should be provided.”

Former Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan told 6PR Mornings “local level issues” have gone under the radar due to the government’s focus on other issues.

“We’re just not seeing any leadership from a government level … coming out with a strategy to deal with it,” he said.

“It seems to me the only strategy they’ve got is we’ll put more police on the beat, but actually that’s not solving the problem.

“We need to do a lot more than that.”
