Federal Attorney-General Michaelia Cash has told Liam Bartlett that Labor’s plans to scrap the Australian Building and Construction Commission will cause serious sexual assault allegations to be swept under the rug.

The ABCC is taking court action against two members of the country’s peak construction union, accusing them of verbal and physical abuse toward women on building sites.

Senator Cash said on 6PR Mornings that Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese only wants to protect its union mates.

“By promising to abolish the building industry watchdog, Mr Albanese is effectively condoning the appalling treatment of women in the construction sector by the CFMEU,” he said.

“Australia simply cannot afford, in particular, as we come out of COVID-19, we cannot afford lawlessness and dysfunction in our building and construction industry.”
