WA fishers may face new restrictions at extended Marmion Marine Park

WA recreational and commercial fishers face further restrictions after reports the Greens want to create a sanctuary zone within the extended Marmion Marine Park along the norther coast.
6PR Boat, Dive and Fishing Show host Karl Langdon says public consultation has closed after community surveys earlier this year on the McGowan Government’s review of the marine park, with rumours the zone could be extended from 9,500ha to 34,500ha but with new fishing restrictions.
“The Greens want 30 per cent of it to be a sanctuary zone, which means no cray fishing, no fishing, no nothing,” he told 6PR Breakfast host Gareth Parker about the area from Trigg Island to Burns Rocks.

The park was gazetted in 1987 as WA’s first marine park and is a valued fishing playground with a healthy ocean habitat, including crayfish and abalone.
