The 40 year tradition sparked by a header fire

Millsy & Karl

In 1984 local Kulin farmer Fred Davis’s header burst into flames, causing a fire on his property which burnt through hectares of his wheat crop .

He was also left without a machine to harvest the rest of his wheat crop.

That’s when the Kulin-Kondinin Football Club stepped in.

“He approached the footy club … to take his crop off for him, and it’s been an ongoing legacy ever since,” President of the Kulin-Kondinin Football Club Simon Duckworth said.

Now every year the club harvests Mr Davis’ crop, and he pays them for each hectare they harvest.

Ideal farming conditions mean that $60,000 was raised for the club this year.

“It just works well,” Mr Duckworth said.

“As a country footy club we’re always trying to keep ahead I suppose.

“We need to fund running a footy club in the bush … it was one way of trying to say in front of the curve.”
