The team heading to Antartica to preserve huts built by early explorer Douglas Mawson

Millsy & Karl

A team of six conservations will set sail for Antartica from Tasmania in order to preserve huts built by early explorer Douglas Mawson and his crew 110 years ago.

The mission will take six weeks where they will perform an assessment on the heritage-listed buildings and complete any repairs that are needed.

Dr Ian Godrey, Chief Conservator at the Mawson Huts Foundation, told Gareth Parker he’s not sure what he’ll find because it’s been six years since their last expedition.

“It’s the windiest place on earth at sea level, so we don’t really know what we’ll find,” he said on 6PR Breakfast.

“We’re hoping the buildings are still in tact, and the work we did last time hasn’t been undone, but powder snow has away of getting in even the most minute of cracks.

“So we’re hoping we don’t have too much snow and ice on the inside of the building.”
