Speed and You Won’t Be Fined

The City of Vincent is going be trialing 40km/h speed limits on about 200 residential streets. Here’s the thing – it won’t be enforceable.

Oliver Peterson has been following this topic closely and he spoke with Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts to get her view.

She explained that reducing the speed from 50km/h to 40km/h doubles the chances of survival in a crash. When Oliver spoke with City of Vincent Mayor Emma Cole a few weeks ago, she said most drivers were already driving slower than 50km/h. So why the unenforceable speed reduction trial?

The Minister said, “this isn’t about enforcing something punitive on the whole community. This about bringing the community together.

“If you can create a better pedestrian environment… where you have a slower travel speed through those residential areas, you may well find this is something that is embraced by the community.”
