Plans are underway to build the nation’s biggest data centre in Western Australia’s remote far north to support large-scale artificial intelligence training.

Alex Jenkins, director of the WA Data Science Innovation Hub at Curtin University, told 6PR Drive host Jamie Burnett that these costly data centres are essential to prevent Australia from having to use overseas data centres.

This is critical as AI becomes more prevalent in sensitive areas such as health and critical infrastructure in mining and defence.

“If they manage to pull it off with renewable energy that’s another bonus as well because a data centre of this size would use about the same power as a medium-sized city,” he said.
