Beyond Arrests: Protecting Kununurra’s vulnerable children amidst rising youth crime
The ongoing turmoil in Kununurra has seen 29 children, aged 10 to 16, arrested.
Addressing this complex issue, Simon Beaumont of Perth Today spoke with former Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan, who noted this has been a persistent problem since his tenure, emphasising the need for action to protect these youths in regional communities.

O’Callaghan suggested that increased police presence only addresses symptoms, not causes, and that intervention is crucial for child safety.
He remarked, ‘I did notice that the CEO this morning of community said we only take kids away as a last resort, I would argue that the last resort has been reached a long long time ago,’ he said.
Wayne Nannup, CEO of the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA, added that every Australian child has a fundamental right to feel safe at home, stating,
“The answer is trying to keep young people away from the justice system and the way to do that is diversion, intervention and prevention,” he said.
