Western Australia is closely observing New Zealand’s crackdown on retail crime, which follows a recent surge in incidents.

Sunny Kaushal, Head of the NZ Government’s Ministerial Advisory Group for the Victims of Retail Crime, informed Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that New Zealand aims to rebalance laws in favour of victims rather than offenders.

“The biggest challenge that we faced here was a perception by criminals that they’re untouchable, that there are no consequences for their actions,” he said

Simon Beaumont then interviewed Peter Peck, CEO of the Liquor Stores Association WA, who endorsed legislative changes but cautioned against promoting citizens’ arrests.

“I’m not keen or interested in my son, my daughter, your daughter, working at a retail outlet and being expected to stop a shoplifter,” he said.
