Spectacular auroras dazzled the globe this past weekend, and even with worries about cloud cover, Western Australia managed a peek at the awe-inspiring display.

Amateur astronomer Matt Woods from Perth Observatory explained to Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that he trekked to Boyagin Rock in the central Wheatbelt specifically to witness the Aurora Australis and returned with some breathtaking images. 

“The actual solar particles interacting with the oxygen and nitrogen particles causes those particles to glow like a neon sign, and that’s what we’re seeing,” he said.
