’90 per cent’ of aged care workers support national strike
Union officials say it is almost certain hundreds of thousands of aged care workers could walk out in the final weeks of the federal election campaign.
Approximately 3500 aged care workers voted to take strike action amid widespread anger over low pay and inadequate staffing conditions.
With the federal campaign in full swing, United Workers Union aged care director Carolyn Smith said she believed strike action would occur “in the next couple of weeks” across Queensland, SA and WA.
“Over 90 per cent of the largest providers all resoundingly voted for action” she told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings.
“Aged care workers have been ignored for far too long and unfortunately we did not see any change to the workforce, which the Royal Commission said was the key issue.
“[We need] more staff, train them better, pay them better.”.
