International horse racing giant Godolphin has finally won its first Melbourne Cup after more than a decade of trying, with Cross Counter winning the $7 million handicap at Flemington.

It’s the first time an England-trained horse has won the Cup, with Charlie Appleby winning after several attempts.

For jockey Kerrin McEvoy, it is his third Melbourne Cup, and he becomes the first jockey to complete the Everest-Cup double.

There were terrible scenes as the horses passed the finishing post for the first of two laps when fancied international The Cliffsofmoher broke down mid-race.

He suffered a fractured right shoulder and was later euthanized.

Earlier, flash flooding ensured international horses would enjoy a soft track more akin to home – more here.

But it didn’t prevent a big crowd turning out, with a final crowd of 83,471.

More to come…
