World first Meningococcal vaccine being trialled in Perth

Simon Beaumont

A world first catch-all Meningococcal vaccine, which would protect against all strains of the disease, is being trialled in Perth.

Meningococcal is a rare, but serious and life-threatening infection that is spread through prolonged contact with mucus from an infected person.

Now, the vaccine, produce by clinical testing facility Linear, is asking for West Australians to participate in a clinical trial.

“It’s a global health burden, not just in Australia but across the world, we’ve estimated at least one million cases across the world with 250,000 deaths,” lead researcher Dr Lara Hatchuel told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings.

“So this is something close to our heart that we want to focus on.”
