What’s behind the rise of Netflix mega-hit Squid Game?

Simon Beaumont

Dystopian thriller Squid Game has shot to the number one watched show world-wide on streaming platform Netflix.

In it, struggling Koreans with unsurmountable debts participate in a series of hyper-violent games with the promise of a giant cash reward if they make it to the end.

Professor of Communication at the University of Canberra Sora Park said she believes it’s a story of class struggle which resonates around the world.

“Although it’s a story about Korea, lots of people in other countries are struggling financially or otherwise and experiencing hardships,” she told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings.

“So i think people can resonate with the desperation that the characters are experiencing in the drama.”
