A western suburbs mayor has suggested council rangers be “upskilled” and given the power of arrest to address local crime issues.

Town of Claremont Mayor Jock Barker joined Jamie Burnett on Perth Live to discuss the rising issue of petty crime and a new strategy to combat it.

“We’ve got a lot of petty crime going on at the present time. I’m frustrated at the inability to combat and reduce crime in our community,” Mayor Barker said.

“It’s my view that the state government should be working with local government to come up with innovative solutions. The future requires that but right now we have these issues going on in town.”
