Recent advancements have brought scientists closer to the development of the world’s first bionic eye.

Researchers at RMIT University have created a functional prototype capable of remembering and interacting with the world much like the human brain.

Professor Sumeet Walia, director of the Centre for Opto-electronic Materials and Sensors, told 6PR The Catchup presenter Seb Clarke that bionic eyes are now within reach.

“If we just look at the fundamentals of how the technology behaves, it can discriminate between colours … It can perform the function of the neurons embedded in the eye … The big hurdle is, one, scaling up and going through the regulatory thresholds that need to be met for a medical device,” he said.
