SpaceX’s giant new rocket exploded minutes after blasting off on its first test flight and crashed into the Gulf of Mexico.

The launch would have sent the biggest and most expensive rocket ever made into space, yet the company had to self-destruct and end the mission after the trajectory of the vessel went wildly off-course.

Nine News correspondent Jonathan Kearsley was at the site, and told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings the unmanned launch would be a setback for Elon Musk and co., but it would not stop them from embarking on future launches.

“People are always laughing at him for ideas he has like electric cars and wanting to create giant rockets and wanting interplanetary travel, but he has pursued and persisted with all of his dreams and ambitions, and this one is still very much alive,” Mr Kearsley said.
