Sobering news: Dementia now Australia’s leading cause of death
Dementia is now the leading cause of death in Australia, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which reports it has overtaken heart disease.

Dementia Australia spokesperson Nigel McPaul spoke with Perth Live host Oliver Peterson about the scale of the challenge, explaining that the estimated 433,300 Australians living with the condition in 2025 is projected to reach 1 million by 2065.
“It’s vitally important that we act on dementia now and invest in a public health approach to brain health and dementia risk reduction while still providing more support to those impacted,” he said.
