Shoddy apartments scandal: Pensioner slams housing department for selling faulty flats and walking away
Pensioner Leonie Turner claims she has experienced nothing but problems since buying her apartment from the Department of Housing in 2021.
Her complex is reportedly now facing a massive $700,000 defect bill to cover repairs, and the department responsible for building and selling the shoddy homes is nowhere to be seen.
Press PLAY to hear about the building defects
Speaking to 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont, she explained the entire Department of Housing-built apartment block has critical defects including no drainage, insufficient waterproofing and inadequate guttering which have led to black mould in some units.
“How come the department for housing are taking no responsibility for this? They were the ones that commissioned the builder, they were the ones who sold the apartments to the general public, but they don’t seem to want to have anything to do with the fact that the building that they got built is not fit for purpose,” she said.
Australian Apartment Advocacy director Samantha Reece then revealed to Simon that Leonie’s case is not unique, stating,
“I’ve got hundreds of cases like Leonie happening here in WA.”
