“We Need to Preserve Them For When We Really Need Them” – Dr Jeannie Yoo

Unrealistic expectations about antibiotics are contributing to the global health threat of antibiotic resistance. People are going to their GP and expecting to walk out with a prescription.

Today Oliver Peterson spoke to  NPS MedicineWise medical adviser and GP Dr Jeannie Yoo who says these expectations are contributing to the overuse of antibiotics.

“Consumers expect to have antibiotics in situations where they are not going to make a difference, like for an ordinary cold and flu.

“When you’re feeling unwell enough to go and see a doctor, it is a very understandable response to feel that a medicine should be prescribed at the end of that consultation that is going to make you feel better.”
