Union says prison officers the only people to guard dangerous offenders

As the hunt continues for serial escapee Laurie John Junior Dodd, questions are being asked how he was able to overpower the guard and go on the run from Royal Perth Hospital on the weekend.

The guards were from security contractor Broadspectrum.

Secretary of the WA Prisoner Officers’ Union Andy Smith tells Jo McManus they need to see the end of contracting out prison services.

“Our prison officers are highly trained individuals. It’s not something you can just do on the spur of the moment.

“It needs to be brought back in so prison officers guard dangerous offenders when they’re out in the community.”
