Shocking Sunscreen Stats in WA Primary Schools

There is an inconsistent message across WA primary schools when it comes to sunscreen. Only 50% of primary schools have sunscreen available in all classrooms and only 55% of primary schools allow time in lessons for students to apply sunscreen.

This is concerning given exposure to UV in childhood and adolescence is a leading cause of melanoma later in life.

Cancer Council WA’s SunSmart Schools Coordinator Sally Blane spoke to Oliver Peterson about the importance of kids being taught about sun safety in primary school.

“Avoiding sunburn in children is absolutely crucial in getting skin cancer rates down.”
