“One of New Zealand’s darkest days”

Gary Adshead

Four people, believed to be three men and one woman are in custody after fatal shootings at mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch, but police aren’t ruling out more suspects.

At least one gunman opened fire while hundreds were attending morning prayer.

Police say the number of dead is “significant” but could not confirm the exact number of fatalities because both locations are still in lockdown.

Defence Force officers intercepted several car bombs and one of the people arrested apparently claimed to be wearing an explosive device.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gave this update shortly after the event.

Simon Beaumont spoke with terrorism, security and international relations expert at Curtin University.
