GM debate continues…

A European Union court’s decision to treat new Genetic Manipulation (GM) techniques dubbed CRISPR, the same way as old transgenic GM techniques has divided the international farming community. Under the ruling, the EU could potentially ban the importation of any produce subjected to CRISPR.

In contrast, several Australian authorities are allegedly pushing for the deregulation of certain GM techniques and products, a move Gene Ethics Executive Director, Bob Phelps staunchly disagrees with.

Mr Phelps told Chris the reasons he believes more research needs to be conducted into the long term effects of new GM techniques.
