Fremantle terrazzo tiles history project

Harvey Deegan

As part of a project for the Fremantle Festival (10 Nights in Port) Gabrielle Howlett and her mother Penny are heading up a project about terrazzo tiles that were designed and made in Fremantle by the Universal Terrazzo Tile Factory. The project aims to share the historical and social significance of the decorative tiles.

Guisseppe Scolaro and his family migrated to Fremantle in 1949 and set up The Universal Terrazzo Tile Factory on Blinco Street, Fremantle soon after. Gabrielle’s mother Penny lives in the original home of Guisseppe and Anna Scolaro which is decorated with their unique terrazzo flooring.

Gabrielle Howlett joined Harvey Deegan on Remember When.
