“Distressing and Degrading” Treatment of a Female Prisoner Giving Birth

Today Oliver Peterson spoke to the Inspector of Custodial Services Neil Morgan about the report he has released into an distressing and degrading incident at Bandyup Womens’ Prison.

A 31 year old woman on remand was left to give birth alone in her cell when she went into labour after night lockdown.

Mr Morgan says because of poor prioritisation, communication and decision-making, prison officers and nursing staff were unable to help her until several minutes after the baby was born despite the woman calling out for help for over an hour.

He says there are workplace culture issues that need to be ironed out.
