“Australians are prepared to pay more” – Dairy farmers rejoice at new code

The Mandatory Dairy Code of Conduct came into effect today. It means dairy farmers are better protected against processors changing prices or contract conditions.

Agriculture Minister Bridget McKenzie told Andrew Williams it’s designed to make things fairer.

“The main reason farmers need the mandatory code of conduct is to ensure they can have confidence in the milk price they are getting paid by the processor at the farm gate.

“We need to now have a tough conversation with supermarkets to say if you want Australians to be buying fresh Australian dairy milk.. then you need to have profitable and sustainable dairy industry.

“That’s my next task for 2020.”
