Two weeks ago the CEO at the Western Australian Cricket Association, Christina Matthews, said she was 97 per cent sure Perth would host an Ashes test at Optus Stadium.

But the emergence of Omicron, the new strain of COVID-19, along with the amount of people broadcasters require to produce a cricket match, has put that back to “50/50”.

“It really is a matter of every day is different,” Ms Matthews told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.

“We woke up this weekend to talk about the new variant in South Africa and other countries, and waiting to see what that actually means.

“It’s certainly not a cut and dry thing we’re trying to organise here.”
