There are growing concerns for the well-being and health of Australians, with extreme heat becoming more common as temperatures continue to rise.

Press PLAY to hear what impact it’s having

Emma Baker, executive director at the national advocacy organisation Sweltering Cities, says a survey has found that extreme heat is causing Australians to get sick.

“People are getting exhausted, dehydrated, this is much worse for people with disabilities, chronic illnesses, older people … they’re feeling deeply isolated by not being able to leave the house,” she told Chrissy Morrissy.

Unsuitable new builds have also been noted, with Ms Baker noting new homes aren’t built for Australian summers.

“We’re not building for the climate … we know that we are facing more and more record temperatures.”

“It’s Australia, it’s hot, but these summers are not the summers of our childhood,” she added.
