A collaboration between Melbourne University, Stanford University in California and University College in London has conducted research linking smartphone use to people’s emotional state.

The research found people use their smartphones to regulate their emotions, stress, boredom and loneliness.

Senior Lecturer in Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne Dr Greg Wadley spoke with Oly Peterson on 6PR’s Perth Live.

“Psychologists call it emotion regulation, they’ve been studying it for many years and it’s essential to normal daily functioning,” Dr Wadley said.
